Abstract


Vegetarian / Vegan Nutrition and Special Concerns in Athletes
Sports nutrition is a type of nutrition that needs to be well balanced and is examined under a separate subtitle under the name of "sports medicine" and needs to be customized and regulated according to the athlete. Sports nutrition has various difficulties and criteria. Providing sufficient macronutrient and micronutrient intake benefits the athlete before, during and after training. Sports nutrition can be easily prepared and followed by sports dieticians. However, there are more special situations in sports nutrition. Vegan and vegetarian athletes need a much different diet. Especially maintaining muscle cretain stores and protein intake is more difficult with plant- based diets, so professional advice is needed. Adequate iron, protein, vitamin D and various micronutrients can be obtained for athletes in a vegan or vegetarian diet, which is well-balanced and plant-based protein sources are included in the diet. This review focuses on the nutrition of athletes who are vegan and vegetarian and who need nutrition in special situations. In this direction, current articles in the literature on sports nutrition were examined and discussed.
