Özet (Abstract)

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between Programmed cell death protein 1 levels expressed on the surface of CD4+ and CD8+ T Lymphocytes in peripheral blood of patients with non-muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer and recurrence and progression. Methods: Patients with T1G3 pathology that received adjuvant intracavitary BCG immunotherapy were included in the study. Patients included in the study were categorized in 3 groups: 1- non-recurrence, 2- recurrence and 3- progression. Peripheral blood samples were collected from the patients and cell surface levels of programmed cell death protein 1 were measured on immune cells by flow cytometry. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the non-recurrence, recurrence, and progression groups in terms of programmed cell death protein 1 expression on the surface of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes (p>0.05). Conclusion: This is the first study to evaluate the relationship between peripheral blood programmed cell death protein 1 levels and the prognosis of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. However, we were not able to demonstrate a correlation between the two in our study. We think that this result is due to the limited studies on the factors affecting PD-1 in the literature and the uncertainties that this situation created in our study. More studies are needed to re-evaluate the relationship between programmed cell death protein 1 and non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer prognosis in primary bladder tumor patients given BCG immunotherapy. In addition, a larger number of patients and accounting for previous infection parameters would be insightful.
